Matthew was pleased to support the launch of the Patient Navigation Programme by the Betterdays cancer care charity at the House of Commons. This Programme is designed to guide women through the breast screening process, locate resources, assist with arranging mammographic services and help with an after-care plan. The Programme was launched by Harold P Freeman M.D., President and Founder of the Ralph Lauren Center for Cancer Care and Prevention in New York and Marina Raime, local resident and founder of the Betterdays cancer care charity.
Studies have shown that even though black women are less likely to develop breast cancer than white women, they have an increased mortality rate because of delayed diagnosis and more aggressive forms of cancer. That is why the programme is so important.
Matthew said, “Betterdays services are designed and delivered in a culturally sensitive way to ensure all women receive care according to their individual need. The charity established by Marina is the 'Big Society' in action. It's a project run by someone who knows better than health care providers and provides services not available by the state.”
Marina said, “We can all make a difference when we work together.”
