Matthew was at Middlesex University’s Freshers' Fair helping new students to get involved with the Conservative Party and the ‘Back Boris’ campaign. Across London over 2,000 students flocked to stalls to sign up to the campaign and back the Mayor's bid for re-election. Middlesex University was part of this campaign and took the opportunity to launch a new Middlesex University Conservative Students’ Union.
Many students said they are impressed by Boris’ record as Mayor, with a lot pointing to how he has helped to create more than 30,000 apprenticeships for young people. Others focused on how he has made London a safer city by cracking down on crime and putting more police on the streets, while there was also talk about the continued success of delivering the Olympics on time and budget. Students have snapped up BackBoris merchandise and are more eager than ever to help out. While we all knew Boris Johnson was popular among students, no-one predicted just how many Freshers would sign up to help on his campaign!
Matthew said: “I was overwhelmed with the response from students. Some asked about tuition fees but acknowledged Higher Education had to be paid for by those who benefitted from it. People were also keen to discuss the Tube, local housing for students and international issues such as climate change and Afghanistan. I first got involved with the Conservative Party whilst at university and it is a great time to think about politics and get involved. I am very pleased at the reception we received from the students overall and look forward to some of the planned events. But most of all, we are all looking forward to next year’s Mayoral elections.”
