The cost of living is a concern for many people in the Hendon constituency. Matthew therefore took the opportunity to visit the Sainsburys supermarket in West Hendon to ask how the supermarket chain is helping local people with their food bills.
During the visit Matthew was pleased to speak to shoppers and hear of personal experiences first-hand. He also toured the reception facility where goods are received before being placed on the shelves. Many of the foodstuffs are kept chilled during this period and are taken directly to refrigerators on the shop floor, requiring a two-way process of monitoring and ordering. The store also has an in-house bakery and Matthew assisted staff as they baked bread and decorated cakes for sale.
Matthew said: "It was good to see how a major supermarket chain is trying to assist people with their weekly shopping bills and to learn of genuine concerns. I was also pleased to see how issues surrounding waste are being handled. The packaging and cardboard from goods is recycled by the company and active steps have been taken to reduce the environmental impact of the store."
