Matthew has welcomed today’s Queen’s Speech which builds on the Government’s commitment to back people who work hard and want to get on in life, and to make our country competitive once again.
Matthew said: “Our challenge is to prepare our country for the future. We have already made good progress. We’re fixing benefits so that it always pays to be in work. We’re making income tax fairer, cutting it for 24 million people - which will benefit an estimated 49,360 people in the Hendon constituency - and taking two million out of tax altogether. We have reduced immigration by a third and cut crime by more than 10 per cent. And all this has been achieved while cutting a third of Labour’s deficit.
“The Queen’s Speech builds on these successes and I welcome the Government’s proposals to introduce Bills to tackle anti-social behaviour, immigration and pension inequality. These are all issues which my constituents tell me must be priorities. I regret only that there was no mention of a Bill to bring forward a referendum on our membership of the European Union. Our membership of the EU has changed drastically and I strongly believe the British people deserve to say whether they wish to stay in – or come out.”
