Health & Social Care Bill - The Myths Busted

There has been a lot of scaremongering about the Health and Social Care Bill by those who care more about politics than people. I am known for speaking my mind, often in plain language, so I can you tell that ...

• There is no privatisation: The NHS will continue to provide treatment free when people need it, regardless of ability to pay.

Local pharmacies under threat

Oak Lodge Medical Centre in Burnt Oak Broadway has applied to open a 100 Hour Pharmacy. Some residents may welcome this proposal as 100 hour pharmacies must open for a minimum of 100 hours per week and can be required to provide additional services to those on offer at high street pharmacies. However, some residents will be concerned that a 100 hour pharmacy could mean the closure of the small pharmacies on Watling Avenue, Burnt Oak Broadway (A5), Deansbrook Road and Station Road.

The character of Hendon

Those of us with families know that locally we need more homes – but they must be built in a way that protects the environment and provides the infrastructure to support us all. That is why local people need to decide where new homes should go, not Whitehall bureaucrats.I will fight to protect the Green Belt and to stop the prolific development of back gardens where developers snap up large houses with land, knock them down and then squeeze a small estate of new homes on to the same plot.

New schools

We all want opportunities for our children and education is a key priority. The Government believes that teachers - not politicians and bureaucrats - should control schools. That is why schools are being given the opportunity to apply for Academy status. This gives heads more power to tackle disruptive children, to protect and reward teachers better, and to give children the specialist teaching they need.

A better deal for train users

As a Hendon resident I am a regular user of the Northern Line and understand how important it is that hard working commuters and other Tube and train users have a smooth and comfortable journey.I will continue to campaign for improvements to the Northern Line and Thameslink and fought for step-free access at Mill Hill Broadway station.

Local healthcare

In its review of the NHS, the Government is committed to transferring power from government to communities and local people.Patients and their GPs must be at the heart of local decision-making.Patients will have extended rights to choose their services and treatment and GPs will have power to commission services which meet the needs of their patients.

More police on the streets

A priority is to tackle crime, anti-social behaviour and the causes of crime which produce so much anxiety among local people.Under Labour the police spent 50% more time on paperwork than they did out on patrol. Labour’s obsession with targets and box-ticking hindered the fight against crimes like burglary.Getting more police on the beat is a top priority for me.
